A route is a name and an ordered list of checkpoints. A route says where a unit should go. A schedule says when and which units.

A route holds from 1 to 1000 checkpoints. Ticking a route in the list draws its checkpoints on the map, each with a number. A route with 200 or more checkpoints draws them as small dots.
| Kind | What it is | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Map point | A point you place with Point on map or load with Import. It is saved with the address Polygon finds for it, or its coordinates if none is found. | A stop that is not a saved place, such as a street address. |
| Geofence | One of your saved geofences. | A depot or customer site you already drew. |
| Unit | One of your units. It follows the unit's live position. | Meeting another unit, for example a van that has to reach a truck. |
The route reports skip unit checkpoints, because a unit has no fixed place.
Each checkpoint has an arrival radius, default 100 m. You type it in metres, or in feet if your account uses miles. For a map point or a unit, a unit arrives when it is inside a circle of that radius around the checkpoint. A geofence checkpoint uses the geofence's own outline. Its radius shows in the form, but rides do not use it.
The order of the list is the order of the route. You can drag a checkpoint to a new place in the list. The order decides how a ride is judged: with a Strict schedule a unit must reach the checkpoints in this order. See Route schedules and rides.
The dashed line on the map joins the checkpoints in list order, from Start to End. It is a straight line, not the road.
Optimize order looks for the shortest order by straight-line distance. The first and last checkpoints stay in place; with Return to start on, only the first does and the route closes back on it. The search runs in your browser for up to two seconds and never offers a longer order than yours. You see a preview on the map and the length before and after, and nothing changes until you select Apply. Road distance can differ.
